July 9, 1996
Dear SCAN members,
On June 22, eleven SCAN members visited the Ashmore tract of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness and Recreation Area. While it was promised that it would be a bit cooler than last month’s trip to the Carolina Bays, the day was very hot and with high humidity. The fairly strenuous walk up an old logging road made everyone very much aware of the weather. As soon as the road started to level out, we left it to “bushwhack” across a hill to get to a cataract bog (an open seepage area on a granite exposure) which was reached before lunch. After lunch, the group explored the bog and then went around Lake Wattacoo. Several members did not finish the trip because of the extreme heat.
The flora list attests to the diversity of the plant life both along the logging road and at the bog. The rare mountain sweet pitcher plant was in bloom. Also, Utricularia, sundews and Indian Paint Brush were seen. A highlight of the trip for Lynn Greenlee was a Diana butterfly that was willing to light on her finger. It was a new addition to her life list.
Cathe Jones was the regional director for the trip but was unable to attend. Alex Ciegler did not get lost once in leading the group to the bog and lake.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Boni,
Vice-President
SAD NEWS: It is with great sadness that we must report the death of a former SCAN member and field trip host, Charles Moore of Brevard, N C. SCAN had several fascinating trips to his piece of mountainside just outside Brevard. He was an amateur botanist who, like many serious amateurs, became an authority recognized even by the professionals. And he loved to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with any one who cared. Botanists will miss him.
PLEASE NOTE: There is information on two fieldtrips in this newsletter. In addition to the regular July fieldtrip, there is a President’s Special in mid-August, a canoe trip in the ACE Basin. Please note that this trip requires action before the end of July…so read carefully. But everyone does that each month, right?
