2019 Annual Meeting

January 26, 2019 @ 10:15 am - 8:00 pm

This month we will have our Annual Meeting. The venue has changed and we will be meeting in the Environmental Center auditorium at Saluda Shoals Park, off of Old Bush River Road. When you enter the park let them know that you are there for the SCAN Annual Meeting and you will not be required to pay the entrance fee. This year we will have three confirmed speakers and one tentative speaker.

Gill Newberry will discuss a 16-gb thumb drive that organizes forty years of high-resolution flower photography. It contains eighteen folders that organize photos by color, habitat, and family. She will show us how to use the information on the thumb drive. I have reviewed the data and it appears to be an excellent plant identification tool. Gill will have some available for sale with proceeds going to a charitable cause. If you are interested in purchasing one you may want to bring your laptop for instructions.

Our second speaker will be Dr. Carolyn Murphy. If her name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you have more than likely read her book, Carolina Rocks! The Geology of South Carolina. Her presentation will briefly explore the development of our state over more than a billion years of geologic history focusing on topics that include plate tectonics theory, fossils, SC geomorphology, and the Charleston earthquake.

The third speaker will be SCAN member Keith Bradley. Since 2016 Keith has been working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to survey and map the rare plants of the National Wildlife Refuges in the Lowcountry and State-managed Heritage Preserves in Horry County. Keith will highlight some of the unusual species he encountered during his surveys, including rare and overlooked native species, new invasive species, and other unusual plants, along with peculiar adventures and field hazards encountered along the way.

Our tentative fourth speaker will be a representative of the Longleaf Alliance who will talk about efforts that are being made to restore longleaf pine forests.

We will have access to the park facilities starting at 9:00am. I will bring a 14-cup coffee maker and cups, but if someone else has a coffee maker that they can bring, that would be great. As always, members are encouraged to bring something yummy to munch on as we socialize prior to the meeting start time which will be 10:15. There are several restaurants along St. Andrews Road, and I will have dining information available for you at the meeting. However, I strongly recommend bringing a bag lunch and enjoy some of the trails at the park. We’ll have an hour and a half for lunch, which is plenty of time to eat and explore. I will have printed copies of the agenda at the meeting, and once I have a  confirmation from our tentative speaker, we will post it on the SCAN Facebook page, website, and we will email it out to everyone.
