Webb Center
March 22, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - March 24, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
James W. Webb Wildlife Management Area
Hampton County, SC
10:30am, March 23, 2019
You won’t want to miss this opportunity; Webb Wildlife Center is one of our absolute favorite places in the world. The habitats include longleaf pine flatwoods, bottomland hardwoods, cypress/tupelo swamps, an oxbow lake, and finally, the shores of the Savannah River. There are many rare plants as well as excellent birding and herping. This is a great place to see red-cockaded woodpeckers, Bachman’s sparrows, and eastern fox squirrels. Perhaps we will witness some epic frog choruses, perhaps including the bird-voiced tree frog which reaches the northern limit of its range along the
Savannah River.
We have permission to be on the property for 3 days! So far, 20 people have signed up to spend the weekend at the lodge. If you would like to join us overnight, please let Eva Pratt know ASAP. Cost is $25 per person, per night. Bring cash or a check payable to the SC Department of Natural Resources. This fee includes hand
soap, dish soap, linens, and towels.
NOTE: Camping is not permitted on the property, so if you want to spend the night, you need to stay in the lodge.
If a weekend away isn’t in the cards, be sure to join us for our outing on Saturday. We’ll start off at 10:30am as usual. Instead of going out to dinner, Eva has arranged an optional catered meal provided by Pinckney’s Food of Estill: fried or BBQ chicken, macaroni & cheese, green beans, coleslaw, yeast rolls, banana pudding, iced tea, lemonade, and all paper products. The estimated cost is $15 per person.
Agenda:
• Friday March 22: For those who have registered with Eva to spend Friday night at the lodge, please bring a dish to share for dinner or snacks / beverages to stock the cocktail table. We can arrive at the property anytime on Friday; the lodge will be available after 1pm. Dinner is tentatively set for 6pm. The gate will remain open overnight so drive safely and arrive when you can.
• Saturday March 23: Lodgers who signed up for the catered dinner can enjoy a bonus catered meal of breakfast casseroles (one with meat, one without), biscuits, and coffee. We’ll gather at 10:30 and head out for our monthly soodle. Bring your own lunch! We’ll reconvene around 5pm to enjoy the catered meal.
• Sunday March 24: We’ll finish up any remaining breakfast casseroles, augmented by any breakfast foods you’d like to bring for yourself. We must be out of the lodge by 11am but we are welcome to stay and explore the property as long as we like.
